About Oxford Industries
Oxford Industries operates in retail, where understanding store performance, location, and customer behavior is core to the business, in Dustin Smerdon's telling.
Oxford Industries is a leading American apparel and lifestyle brand company headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 1942 as a manufacturer of military uniforms, the company is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol OXM, led by Chairman, President, and CEO Tom Chubb, and generates more than $1.5 billion in annual revenue with more than 6,000 employees.
Its brand portfolio includes Tommy Bahama, known for resort wear, tropical hospitality, and restaurants; Lilly Pulitzer, known for its colorful prints and coastal style; Johnny Was, known for bohemian, California-inspired fashion; and Southern Tide, known for classic coastal prep wear, along with additional labels including The Beaufort Bonnet Company and Duck.
The Challenge
When Oxford Industries went looking for a business intelligence platform, the goal was data exploration and faster data accessibility for the business.
In retail, understanding the store, the location, and the customers coming in is fundamental to the business.
The Solution
Oxford Industries put Sigma in the hands of the business once the team saw it could handle real analytical work. Replicating complex Excel worksheets directly inside Sigma proved it could support how the business already worked with data.
In practice, Oxford Industries extracts data from source systems into Snowflake, cleans it, and materializes it into tables. Sigma connects directly to that Snowflake environment, and the business explores store, location, and customer data on its own, once it has the proper Snowflake grants.
The Impact
The clearest result is speed. Moving data into Snowflake and then into Sigma shortens the distance between the data team and the business. That same connection lets the team rebuild complex Excel worksheets directly inside Sigma and pull multiple source systems into one usable view.
We were able to replicate some pretty complex Excel worksheets inside of Sigma relatively easy.Dustin Smerdon, Director of Data & Analytics, Oxford Industries
