Put Business Teams in the Analytics Driver’s Seat with Sigma Workbooks

Joe Goldberg

Director of Product Marketing, Sigma

We are thrilled to announce the release of Sigma Workbooks which accelerates data-driven decisions by putting the power of data analytics across billions of rows of live data directly into the hands of marketers, accountants, product managers, and other cross-functional business team members.

The easy-to-use, collaborative canvas enables everyone — including non-technical business users — to find answers to critical questions in seconds, iterate and interact on analyses, share narratives in one unified place, make data-driven decisions, and embed analysis into other applications.

New Features & Capabilities: Overview

The new features and capabilities of Sigma Workbooks fall into four main categories:

Unified Collaboration Canvas

Interactive Ad Hoc Analysis

Faster User Experience

Embedded Workbooks

  • Unified Collaboration Canvas: A Sigma Workbook is a document that makes it easy to bring multiple data elements, including spreadsheets, charts, text, and images, into a single collaboration canvas to make it easy to tell a data story, or narrative, with live data and collaborate with colleagues. Analysis and presentation are now seamlessly integrated.
  • Interactive Ad Hoc Analysis: Already strong ad hoc analysis capabilities have been enhanced, including new visual and interactive data exploration with single-click actions that make it easy to filter and drill down into chart elements, and analyze the data powering a visualization to easily answer deeper, unanticipated questions. The use of arbitrary formulas and flexibility of pivot tables have also been enhanced. The simplicity and interactive nature of these capabilities means they are easily usable by business users.
  • Faster User Experience: The user’s browser can be used to instantly perform certain operations, including queries or filters, on data in the browser cache, leading to a better user experience and more ad hoc analysis.
  • Embedded Workbooks: Page(s) in a Sigma Workbook can be directly embedded into an external or internal application so end viewers, such as customers, partners, and employees, can go beyond an embedded dashboard and into the underlying elements and data to perform new, deeper exploration and analysis. Organizations can use Embedded Workbooks in external applications for higher customer satisfaction and new potential revenue streams.

More detail on the main features and their benefits:

Unified Collaboration Canvas

feature/capabilitywhat it doesbenefit
Single DocumentSingle, integrated document for all analysis and presentation. No more separate Worksheets and Dashboards.Linkage between data and visualizations is much smoother and intuitive. Easier to manage documents and avoids “document sprawl.”
CanvasBrings together elements like spreadsheets, charts, images, and text on a single page to tell a data story or narrative. Each element can be driven by its own set of live data or the data of another element.Faster, more accurate analysis, insight and team collaboration. No longer need to use multiple, static documents to make decisions.
PagesEach has its own data canvas and can be used to better organize analysis in a single document.A more spreadsheet-like experience, resulting in fast analysis and insight.
Simplified UISimpler and cleaner interface when starting analysis from scratch, and more intuitive to then perform exploration/analysis & turn it into visualizations.Analysis is more approachable for business users, without removing power or expressibility.

Interactive Ad Hoc Analysis

feature/capabilitywhat it doesbenefit
Visually FilterEasily include / exclude data as needed with a single click on a visualization. No need for pre-set drill paths set by an Administrator.Easy, unconstrained visual data exploration to get to fast insight.
Drill AnywhereDrill into whatever chart field desired to view data in a manner that makes the most sense with a single click. No need for pre-set drill paths set by an Administrator.Easy, unconstrained visual data exploration to get to fast insight.
Show underlying dataExpanding a visualization will show a table with the underlying row-level data driving it. Table data can then be analyzed via calculations, groupings, filters, etc, to get to new insight.Easy to go beyond a dashboard or visualization to do more complex analysis at the lowest level of detail, or a row.
Arbitrary formulas in charts / pivot tablesAbility to apply arbitrary formulas to a chart or pivot table. Formulas can include percent of total, margins, custom aggregates, and more.More powerful, easier analytics when wanting to stay within the chart or pivot table.
Enhanced pivot tablesPivot tables have been enhanced and now treated as a “first-class” table to make it easy to expand and collapse individual values, and to calculate totals and subtotals.Pivot tables are more flexible, require less calculations, and are more similar to how they would work in traditional spreadsheets, making them more accessible to business users.

Faster User Experience

feature/capabilitywhat it doesbenefit
Browser QueryLocal browser selectively executes queries, filters, and sorts for data cached in browser memory in milliseconds.Faster query results and operations leads to better user experience and more ad hoc analysis.

Embedded Workbooks

feature/capabilitywhat it doesbenefit
Embedded WorkbooksPage(s) in a Sigma Workbook can be directly embedded into an external or internal application so end viewers can go beyond the dashboard to perform new exploration and analysis.Easier for external customers/partners to explore and analyze their data. Higher customer satisfaction & possible new revenue streams.
